Journal writing is a powerful tool for self-realization, personal growth, and well-being. Whether you are an experienced journal writer or new to this craft, it can be helpful to get new writing prompts and exercises to keep your creative journal writing juices flowing. Here are three creative sparks for your journaling:
1) Take a walk in nature…lean against a tree, sit on a large rock, have your toes dipped in the water’s edge…in other words, physically connect your body to nature in some intentional way. Breathe with awareness for three deep breaths – inhale for a count of six seconds, pause, exhale for a count of six seconds. Again, theree times. Now really feel your connection with nature (the tree, the stone, and/or the water, or whatever it may be) and use this prompt to start your journal writing: What I notice touching _____ (this tree) is ________. I am aware of….
2) Use essential oils or flower essences – as you awaken one sense fully (in this case your sense of smell) you can open other areas of deeper awareness. Select an essential oil (some of my favourites are lavendar, citrus oils such as orange, grapefruit, or lemon, etc.) and inhale this scent. Now use the following writing prompt: This smell makes me feel…. Or, this smell causes me to remember….
3) Pick five words – select any five words, quickly, spontaneously, write them down, now use these to create a journal entry. Here are five to get you started: joy, geranium, conflict, sparrow, wonder. Have fun.

Smell is the most evocative of the senses so essential oils are a grand idea for writing and along with the healing aspects of writing, the essential oils have many healing properties. As for vibrational flower essences, they offer Nature’s support for rebalancing our over-active nervous systems and connect us to our hearts.
